"Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?" -- Frida Khalo
This new year I am restarting my personal Oriel Pendant Challenge to create one new pendant design a week. I may not achieve that, but that's what I'm going for! In this last week I finished one that features Frida Khalo. I used an image of her from one of her self-portraits, placing it on top of two ribbons fused together. I added tiny dried flowers to her hair, the kind that manicurists use to ornament fingernails. The back of the oriel shows the words "Perfumed with Flowers".
This pendant is also my submission for Day 4 of the
2010 Creative Every Day Challenge.
"Through her paintings, she breaks all the taboos of the woman's body and of female sexuality." -- Diego Rivera on Frida Kahlo
Is she an island girl? btw what does the back look like? Love that charm that dangles.
ReplyDeleteI found you through Creative Everyday. I love that pendant of Frida. I'm going to link over to your etsy shop...I hope it's available to purchase! It's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I don't see it yet. Can you give me the details on the pendant? Size? Also, can you take a picture given to you and craft a custom made? So exciting!
ReplyDeleteNo, Chrissy, the beautiful Frida Khalo was Mexican, although many of her paintings have that lush, island feel. Thank you Cindy for your compliments! I went to your website -- wonderful portraits and photos! And also left you an email with details. Check out my Mirror Mirror site -- maybe you'd like to participate? I'm posting the January 2010 submissions starting tomorrow! (Chrissy -- send me your Jan photo!)
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful! I love the long thin neck!
ReplyDeleteThe setting here is stunning. Where is that? A doll house? Or is that the biggest pendant you've ever made?
ReplyDeleteI'm working on it Virginia! lol... thought I had one for 'other reflections' but thought it was a bit out there...lol
ReplyDeleteThanks Billy! Chrissy, send me that photo -- I want to see it! Koufax, isn't that background cool? It does look like a doll house! It's a photo of a bedroom from a home in England, from the book "Paint: The Big Book of Natural Color". My home is filled with color too but I'd like more of it to be like that!
ReplyDeleteFrida Khalo - She feels like a kindred spirit. I can't be the only one.
ReplyDeleteHer life story is right out there in her paintings- f/ all the world to see.
My husband and I went to a special exhibit- Kit had to leave- Her work was too much for him to bear. Her raw emotions, so meticulously rendered, tell the story of pain and betrayal and grief. Then we see the self portraits-another side of Frida-My favorites are with her monkey.
I love the way you're honoring Frida with your beautiful pendants.
I think Frida is fascinating. What a beautiful tribute to her.
ReplyDeleteI love the quote on this week's pendant. I found you through the Creative everyday challenge What fun!!
ReplyDeleteVery creative. It's an interesting piece.
